A group of thieves, armed with a sword, tried to bite off the rings of a 90-year-old woman before looting her home and fleeing in her car.
The robbery happened early Saturday in the Charlo suburb of Port Elizabeth.
The police said that the 90-year old woman woke up at 1 am on Saturday after hearing her dogs bark in the house. After looking out of the window she realized her garage door was open.
Three men attacked the woman when she tried to go out by the kitchen door to close the door.
Police spokeswoman Priscilla Naidu says one of the men armed with a sword pushed the woman inside.
“They demanded money. One of the men tried to bite the rings of the woman’s fingers, but he was unsuccessful. The suspects stole a small amount of money, clothing, a television, two cell phones, and a .38 revolver. They left in the woman’s gray Chevy Spark, ”says Naidu.
Before the men fled, they tied the woman and her son with electrical cables and left them in a room.
The woman’s car was later found abandoned in Prospect Road, Walmer.
Naidu said the woman sustained minor injuries to her fingers and arm.
