A total of seven incidents of farm attacks in a 15 km radius in the vicinity of the Onderstepoort smallholdings in Pretoria are cause for serious concern.
This is according to John Moodey, the DA’s spokesperson on community safety in Gauteng, who says incidents of armed robbery, attempted robbery and attempted murder were brought to light after the attacks at the Pretoria North police station.
In one of the incidents, two people sustained head injuries and in a separate incident an 18-year-old boy was shot in the neck.
“The incidents are just a few of the many that indicate that farmers are under siege by criminals. Yet the ANC-led government does nothing to ensure their safety.
“For far too long, the DA has asked Gauteng’s ANC-led government to do something about the safety of rural communities because the previous government’s proposed interventions have had little to no success,” said Moodey.
The party also tabled a motion in the Gauteng provincial legislature on violent crime in the province, especially against those in rural areas.
The DA also called on Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko to prioritize the attacks and equip the police with additional resources so that they are in a better position to protect farming communities.
