Seven suspects were arrested when they were allegedly caught while robbing a post office in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape.
The suspects were arrested in the early morning hours of Nqamakwe on Friday after officers from the crime intelligence unit received information about a possible robbery, Brig said. Police spokesman Tembinkosi Kinana said.
“The officers followed up the information and caught the suspects at the scene where they were already breaking into the post office. The suspects saw the officers and tried to escape without success. “
Police seized a 9 mm pistol, ammunition, two industrial grinders, two iron pipes and two vehicles.
The suspects, aged between 30 and 45, are expected to appear in Nqamakwe Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, business robbery and possession of equipment used for home burglaries.
Lieutenant General. Provincial Police Commissioner Liziwe Ntshinga thanked the officers for their actions and also thanked members of the public for their assistance in the fight against crime.
