Six family members were shot in their home about 40km from Durban on Thursday night while watching television, while three family members managed to flee.
Brig. Jay Naicker, provincial police spokesman, said the family was sitting in their home in Mpumalanga township about 20:30 on Thursday when they heard gunshots at the door and window.
“The six family members, aged between 11 and 52, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene,” Naicker says.
A three-year-old boy was shot in the leg, while three other victims, without injuries, were able to flee the scene.
Naicker says the three-year-old was taken to a hospital.
Khombinkosi Jula, provincial police commissioner, expressed his dismay at the incident.
“It is disturbing that there are such heartless people who can murder so cruelly. There is no justification for killing others so cold-blooded, ”says Jula.
Detectives from the province’s organized crime unit are investigating the incident.
“We are following all the clues so that we can quickly arrest the suspects.”
Police are investigating charges of murder and attempted murder.
