More than 5,000 police officers have already tested positive for the Covid-19 coronavirus disease, 36 of which have already died.

This is what Police Minister Bheki Cele said to police members during a virtual session on Friday morning.

“The virus has already infected more than 5,000 members, causing hundreds of police stations to be disinfected,” Cele said.

He expressed his appreciation for the hard work of police officers.

“I address you as Minister of Police who appreciate the hard work you have done over the past three months. However, I am also concerned about your safety and well-being during the Covid-19 pandemic, ”Cele told police.

Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about the actions of police officers despite the ongoing pandemic.

“Armed with masks, sanitizers and gloves, you tackled the pandemic. “You have left the comfort of your homes behind to tackle the storm,” Cele said.

According to him, during the pandemic, police have already kept more than 14,000 roadblocks and maintained a visual presence at beaches, markets, shopping malls and other areas where congestion could occur.
