Eight suspects, including five police officers, appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday on charges of corruption.
Police officers, aged between 30 and 50, are attached to the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) 10111 call center in Hilton.
Capt. Police spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo said in a statement that the eight suspects were arrested on Thursday after information was received that the officers allegedly conspired with a private ambulance and tow service.
Police officials allegedly provided emergency information to the emergency services in the Pietermaritzburg area. This means that these emergency services had an unfair advantage over others in responding to incidents. The police, in turn, received favors from the agreement.
According to Mhlongo, more arrests are expected soon.
