Four police constables will appear in the Gauteng Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday after allegedly assaulting two men in police custody last weekend. One of the men was found dead after the alleged assault.
Sontaga Seisa, spokesman for the Independent Police Investigation Directorate, said the constables allegedly assaulted two men, 36 and 39 years old, respectively, in the Honeydew police station detention cells Sunday night.
The men were repeatedly kicked and beaten after which the 39-year-old man collapsed and began to bleed. However, Seisa said the constables did not give their best and proceeded with the alleged assault before they finally left.
It is then that the other man notices that one on the ground is breathing abnormally. He tried in vain to get the attention of police and was later transferred to the Randburg police station.
Seisa says that the severely injured man who remained in the cell’s brother insisted on seeing him later that night. It was then that he found his brother’s body in the cells.
The constables, all aged between 25 and 36, were subsequently arrested on charges of murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
According to Seisa, IPID intends to oppose the suspects’ bail application when they appear in court next week.
“IPID is once again calling on police officers to respect laws,” Seisa added.
