A 14-day-old baby girl who was kidnapped at the Lakeside Shopping Center in Benoni has been missing for days.
Koketso Mphenemene is missing for three days and there is no trace of her abductor, except for a screenshot of footage that captured security cameras at the shopping mall.
According to Capt. Police spokesperson Nomsa Sekele was kidnapped on Saturday, February 22, by Koketso.
Sekele says the baby’s mother met the alleged kidnapper at a clinic for the first time on February 19. The two started talking and Koketso’s mother told the suspected kidnapper that she was looking for work.
“The woman told the mother her sister could get a job for her. Then they exchanged numbers, ”Sekele says.
On the day of Koketso’s kidnapping, the women met at the mall. Koketso’s mother was under the impression that the woman’s sister got a job for her. The woman said her sister was on her way, but they had to wait longer.
“While they were waiting, the woman offered Koketso’s mother money to buy her food. The mother then left her daughter with the woman. When she returned, the woman and her baby were gone, ”Sekele says.
According to Sekele, the police unit against family violence, sexual offenses and child protection (FCS) is investigating the case.
