Farmers need to arm themselves to protect themselves and their families from criminals because the police do not have the ability to help them, says Ian Cameron, head of community safety at AfriForum.
Cameron says farmers should be able to defend themselves and cannot rely on government and police to help them with this. He says farmers should, among other things, arm themselves with firearms to ensure them and their family’s safety.
“We have to fight fire with fire. Sometimes one has to take a life to save another. If a farmer’s wife and children’s safety are compromised, he must be able to act, ”says Cameron.
He added farmers should receive training and be responsible when handling firearms.
Cameron was referring to Police Minister Bheki Cele who announced an amnesty period for handing in firearms.
Cameron says the amnesty could cause law-abiding citizens who submit their firearms to be defenseless against criminals who do not surrender their firearms.
