The Fars news agency says the plane experienced technical problems after taking off at Tehran Imam Khomeini Airport.

Rescuers were dispatched to the location near the airport where the plane crashed.

“The fire was so great that we couldn’t start a rescue effort. We have 22 ambulances, four bus ambulances and a helicopter there, ”Pirhossein Koulivand, head of Iran’s emergency services, told the state broadcaster.

Kulivand had earlier expressed the hope that some of the passengers and crew could be saved.

“The plane was on fire, but we sent out crews and we might be able to save some of the passengers.”

Reza Jafarzadeh, the spokesman for the country’s civil aviation authority, told the state broadcaster that there were 170 passengers on board the Boeing 737 NG.

It is unknown whether the incident could be linked to the Iran-US conflict, the BBC reports .
