Zimbabwe has changed the tone of land seizures this Monday by giving white farmers their seized land back which was taken under Pres. Robert Mugabe’s reign.
In the past, they seized land owned by white farmers in their “Anti-racist” efforts with land reforming. They set out to distribute land equally between black subsistence farmers and white Zimbabweans of European ancestry.
Looking at the current affairs of Zimbabwe it’s fair to say that this has failed and their grand plan did not work as now they have announced they will allow foreign white farmers to apply for their seized land to be returned.
Information Ministry secretary and the government spokesman Nick Mangwana has confirmed this in a tweet on Tuesday and saying that this offer does not apply to all evicted white farmers.
“Some of the previous owners had already been compensated from the previous government. For example, the Dutch farmers were being paid over the years,” Mangwana said. “They may get that land or replacement land elsewhere instead of compensation.”
South Africa is also currently undergoing land reformation. Could this be regrettable in the future and could they also be forced to take a ‘U-turn’ on their actions?
Nick Mangwana has also confirmed that those settled on land [black farmers] will be offered an alternative plot of land. This will allow previous owners to move back in and not leave the current farmers homeless.
It’s debatable why this route was not taken in the first place, why could the state not provide state-owned land at cheaper rates to reduce inequality – It leaves many unanswered questions.
