In a retrenchment notice SAA released on Monday, the company told trade unions that race could play a factor dismissing employees.
SAA says it could possibly dismiss up to 2,268 of its 4,708 workers. This includes 49 management-level employees, 36 specialists, 344 pilots, 811 crew members, and 1,028 other staff members.
Maroela Media reported that trade union, Solidarity will consider legal action, which may include urgent legal action regarding the decision.
“We are stunned. The SAA is in intensive care, about to die but they are more concerned about racial figures than skills.
“The decision to use race as a criterion for retrenchment is immoral, illegal and inconsistent with the purpose of business rescue,” Dr. Dirk Hermann, chief executive of Solidarity, said.
The notice confirms that SAA is in a distressed financial position, as well as the need for business rescue. The notice also states that SAA lacks certain skills.
“To save SAA from its distress, it needs the best possible skills. You can’t dictate the race of the specialists who have to save you when you’re dying, ”Hermann says.
“To use race in any way to showcase skills, undermines the purpose of business rescue. The SAA may be able to get its racial figures right, but it will be liquidated. Workers’ race profile will be stretched, but everyone will lose their job. “
Solidarity gave SAA the opportunity until Thursday, March 12, to give it an undertaking not to continue with the race criterion. “If SAA does not do this, Solidarity will continue with legal action.”Maroela Media
