Two months after it was established, Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa’s energy war room finally meets on Thursday.
Ramaphosa put together the special team in December following a team that also existed in 2014.
The team is led by adj. David Mabuza and includes other ministers. They must help solve the country’s power crisis.
Finance Minister Tito Mboweni, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, and Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe will meet for the first time on Thursday, according to Mabuza’s office.
His office did not provide any further details.
The 2014 war chamber’s initial goal and main focus was to help accelerate and improve the maintenance of Eskom’s aging coal-fired power plants and also ensure that defaulters pay their debts to the utility company.
Those problems continue for years to come, but Eskom’s new CEO André de Ruyter has announced a refined maintenance plan aimed at repairs within the next 18 months.
