On Wednesday, the All-share index continued its free fall, dropping nearly 6.4% to 38,927 points. That’s the lowest closure in nearly eight years.
The banking index as a whole lost 14.9% and the entire financial companies index fell 12.3%. On Wednesday, banks were among the major losers.
Capitec, which fell by nearly 28%, was the second biggest loser of the day on the entire fair.
FNB and RMB fell by 14.3%, Standard Bank by 12.8%, Nedbank by 12.2% and Absa by 10.7%.
The JSE dropped in pace with other markets on Wednesday as investors’ fears overcame hopes of aid announced by governments for economies.
