Eskom has shed power for certain densely populated parts of Gauteng where network interruptions occur due to continued illegal connections.
The power supplier said on Saturday that the so-called power reduction to the areas will only be done between 05:00 and 09:00 and 17:00 and 22:00, when the greatest damage to its infrastructure is done.
“Eskom noted with concern the increase in transformer and mini-substation explosions caused by a network overload, illegal connections, bypassed meters, tampering, as well as theft and vandalism of power infrastructure.
“The explosions lead to prolonged power cuts that leave people without electricity for days and can cause fatal injuries.”
Eskom says it needs to limit the load to limit the damage to infrastructure as well as protect its assets and the community.
The power supplier said that because of the incredible amount of repairs that need to be done repeatedly, its resources are being driven to a breaking point and the repairs cannot always be done quickly.
